Who Should the Cubs Keep For 2023?

Cubs

It’s been a rough 2022 season for the Chicago Cubs, and it’s pretty clear that this franchise is in the middle of a rebuild. The hope is that the rebuild doesn’t last for a number of years, but it will take some big moves in the offseason to speed up the process.

Even though the Cubs are going to finish with one of the worst records in all of baseball, there are some players that are having a solid season. The front office is going to have to choose some players to keep around for 2023 and beyond, and it’s time to look at those players.

League insiders believe that the Cubs are going to be aggressive in free agency, especially with the shortstop position. One big signing could end up putting the Cubs in a position to get back into the playoff race.

Position Players

The Cubs had a pair of position players make the All Star team in 2022, and that seems like a great place to start when building a roster. Outfielder Ian Happ is going to be back for sure, but the other All Star could be gone.

Catcher Willson Contreras was shopped heavy at the trade deadline, but the Cubs were unable to find a move. Contreras is still one of the best offensive catchers in baseball, and the Cubs need to bring him back to lock up that position.

Joining Happ in the outfield for next season will be Seiya Suzuki in right field, and there is a question mark in center. Christopher Morel is one player that will definitely be back in some capacity, and Nelson Velasquez should return as well.

The infield is where things start to get thin as Nico Hoerner is the only starter that should be brought back as an everyday player. Hoerner will likely need to shift over to second base if the Cubs can land a shortstop.

Nick Madrigal and Patrick Wisdom should both return to the team as depth pieces as well, but that’s really where it should end.

Starting Rotation

The starting rotation has been a bit of a mess this season, but injuries have played a big role in that. Going into 2023 the Cubs could actually be in a good spot with the starting rotation, but an additional arm is going to be needed.

Keegan Thompson and Justin Steele should both be in the starting rotation in 2023 as both players have earned that right. Marcus Stroman and Kyle Hendricks will be back as well, and those two pitchers need to stay healthy and step up their play.

The farm system for the Cubs is actually loaded with pitching and a number of different players could be called up to start the year. There isn’t a true ace on this staff though, and that’s going to be needed if the Cubs are going to compete for the playoffs.
