Cubs Make Good Move With Miley

The Chicago Cubs did not wait long to make their first significant move in the offseason, claiming starting pitcher Wade Miley off of waivers from the Cincinnati Reds. Miley is nearing the end of his pitching career, but he was terrific in Cincinnati a year ago.

What makes this move even better is the fact that the Reds were looking for a trade partner with Miley. The Cubs never showed any interest in a trade, but they were ready to pounce on the veteran in free agency.

Miley is going to give the Cubs around 200 innings if he is healthy, and he fills a huge void in Chicago. This move has already been celebrated and applauded by college football experts, and the most loyal fans should celebrate this move as well.

Not only does this move improve the division title chances for the Cubs, but it hurts the Reds in a big way. Don’t be surprised if this is a move that ends up having a huge impact on the MLB Playoffs.

Other Moves Are Coming

Even if Cubs favs aren’t willing to celebrate this move then they should at least recognize that this is a sign of more moves coming. The front office continues to maintain that they will be aggressive in free agency, and this is only the start.

The best part about this Miley signing is the fact that the Cubs would even flip the veteran for prospects next season if things start to go awry. Miley is not going to be an ace for the Cubs in 2022, but he is going to give the rotation some much needed depth.

Last year most of the action in free agency came very late, but the Cubs got a jump on the rest of the teams in the NL Central. Adding Miley was a very cheap starting pitching option, but other holes will be filled soon as well.

Cubs in Position to Contend

This previous season was a rough end to the best run of Cubs baseball in team history, but that doesn’t mean that a new norm will be established. Think of the 2021 season as an outlier as the front office has already made it clear that they are looking to contend again this season.

Looking to contend and actually contending are two completely different things, but the Miley signing is a step in the right direction. Acquiring Wade Miley isn’t going to make the Cubs a World Series contender, but it can help them win the NL Central.

The Central Division is not going to be strong again in 2022, and the Cubs will have a shot to win the division. You would be a fool to think that the Cubs are going to be buried in the division standings next season.
