Chicago Cubs News – 2021 Season Update: This Cubs Team is….Fun?
They say that the Major League Baseball season is a marathon, but it feels like the Chicago Cubs have gone on a cross-country trip in 2021. This has been a season filled with twists and turns, and one that has been a strange emotional journey for Cubs fans.
The first three full weeks of August felt like the Cubs were hitting a new rock-bottom every single day, and they were turning into the laughing stock of the league. It seemed as if the Cubs would never win a game again, and they were heading towards the bottom of the standings.
Things have changed quickly in Chicago, and this current version of the Chicago Cubs is a ton of fun to watch and follow. Those words and feelings didn’t seem possible after the Trade Deadline, but I think most fans would agree.
8 out of 9 Ain’t Bad
The Cubs have now won eight of their last nine games, and just rattled off seven straight wins. This run has been fueled by some clutch hitting and home runs from some very unexpected sources.
This is still a roster full of players that were cast off from other teams, but it has made it more fun to root for these guys. It seems as if David Ross has settled into a lineup that he wants to use for September, and that group just continues to produce.
Frank Schwindel has turned into a sort of folk here in Chicago, and he was recently named the National League Player of the Week. “Frank the Tank” has belted eight home runs since August 13, and has also been coming up with clutch hits seemingly every night.
Ian Happ, yes, THAT Ian Happ, has hit 10 home runs since August 13, and this has come after an abysmal first few months of the year. Happ is finally playing loose and free once again, and he looks like a player the Cubs can build around for the future.
This is still a team that would get blown out by some of the top teams in the league, but they are having a blast and winning games in exciting fashion. The stands at Wrigley Field get more empty with each series, but fans are missing out on watching a rag-tag group of players put together an impressive run.
Chicago Cubs News – Pitching Still a Key
While it has been the heroics of certain players at the plate that has spurred the Cubs, the major focus is on the pitching staff. The Cubs have been working to build up their farm system with pitchers over the last few years, and it appears that the plan is coming into focus.
Justin Steele continues to get better every time he takes the mound, and Adbert Alzolay is now back and pitching well. Of course, Kyle Hendricks continues to do his thing, but it looks like the Cubs have some intriguing pieces for next season.
Things could head in the other direction again before the end of the season, but this has been a great ten days to be a Cubs fan.
