It’s hard to get excited about much surrounding the Chicago Cubs this season, and things are going to get even worse soon. With that being said, it’s hard to ignore a weekend series against the Cardinals, especially when the Cubs go on the road and win two out of three.
St. Louis thinks that they have a team that is capable of winning the World Series, but the Cubs looked to be an even match all weekend long. Even after getting down 5-0 in the series finale, the Cubs stormed right back and might have sent Jack Flaherty into retirement.
The fact that the Cubs were able to win in St. Louis should be a sign to the front office that this team just needs a little bit more help. There are holes all over this roster, but there are also some positives and a chance to build a competitive team again.
The Cubs are not going to catch the Cardinals this year, but that’s not exactly the point. It’s perfectly fine that the Cubs are trying to do a reset to set themselves up for success, but this should not be a long and drawn out rebuild.
Even if Ricketts and company aren’t going to start spending money, at least Cubs fans had this past weekend to talk a little trash to hated Cardinals fans.
Cardinals Hate Hendricks
If the St. Louis Cardinals had their way, the Cubs would trade Kyle Hendricks to the American League so they would never have to see him again. Hendricks has absolutely owned the Cardinals throughout his career, and did it again in the series opener.
The “Professor” went 7 ⅓ innings while allowing just five hits and a walk in a dominant outing. That performance pushed Hendricks’ record to 13-3 against the Cardinals and he also sports a miniscule ERA of less than 2.80.
It has been a rough season for Hendricks on the mound, but he just continues to shove against the Cardinals every time he faces them.
Happ, Contreras Should Be All-Stars
The first round of All Star voting is nearing completion and it looks as if the Cubs will have one All Star. Willson Contreras is leading at the catcher position by a wide margin, and he is deserving of that honor.
Contreras is putting up some monster numbers this season, and he is having the best year of his career. This could set up a situation in which Contreras makes the All Star team with the Cubs but might actually be traded before that point.
Ian Happ has not gotten much love when it comes to All-Star outfielder voting, but that appears to be a big mistake. Happ is one of the best outfielders in baseball this season and he deserves a shot to play in the Midsummer Classic.
Not only is Happ worthy of being an All Star this season, but he is also going to force Hoyer’s hand at the Trade Deadline. The Cubs will have to decide if they feel that Happ can be a part of the next great Cubs team or if they want to get prospects in return.
